Summer in South Florida means one thing for boat owners: more time on the water. With warm temperatures, longer days, and endless coastal destinations to explore, the summer months are prime boating season. But before you head out, it’s important to make sure your vessel is ready for the heat, heavy use, and saltwater conditions that define South Florida summers.
At Proficient Marine, we see a surge in service requests every spring and early summer — and for good reason. The boats that get properly prepped before the season are the ones that keep running smoothly all the way through Labor Day. Here’s what you should be checking before you make your first big summer run.
Check Your Cooling System
South Florida summers push outboard engines hard. High ambient temperatures combined with warm water mean your cooling system has to work overtime. Before peak season, have a technician inspect the water pump impeller, thermostat, and all hoses. A failing impeller is one of the most common causes of engine overheating — and can leave you stranded miles offshore. Replacing it as preventative maintenance costs far less than an engine rebuild.
Inspect Your Battery and Electrical System
Heat is the enemy of marine batteries. Summer temperatures in South Florida can dramatically shorten battery life, and the last thing you want is a no-start situation at the ramp on a busy Saturday morning. Have your batteries load-tested, check all connections for corrosion, and make sure your charging system is functioning properly. If your batteries are more than three years old, replacement before the summer rush is often the smarter move.
Flush and Inspect Your Fuel System
Fuel that sat in your tank over the off-season can degrade and cause issues with carburetors or fuel injectors. Have your fuel system inspected, filters replaced, and if there’s any concern about fuel quality, a professional fuel flush can save you major headaches on the water. Also check fuel lines for cracks or brittleness — UV exposure and heat accelerate rubber degradation.
Check Your AC and Ventilation (If Applicable)
If your vessel has a cabin with air conditioning, summer is when it earns its keep. Have your marine AC serviced before temperatures climb — a unit that struggled in spring will fail in July. Ensure all vents are clear and that the raw water strainer for the AC system is clean and unobstructed.
Bottom Paint and Hull Inspection
Warm South Florida waters accelerate marine growth on your hull. If you keep your boat in the water, check that your antifouling bottom paint is in good shape. A fouled hull creates drag, reduces fuel efficiency, and can put added stress on your engine. A fresh coat of quality bottom paint before summer is one of the best investments you can make for performance and fuel savings.
