πͺοΈ Storm Prep for Boat Owners in South Florida: What to Check Before the Forecast
Hurricane season is officially here, and if you own a boat in South Florida, preparation is everything. A few hours of prep now can save you thousands in repairs β or worse, a total loss.
Hereβs a practical checklist from the techs at Proficient Marine to make sure your vessel is ready when the weather turns:
β 1. Check Your Batteries & Charging System
Storms often bring long stretches of dock time or power outages. Make sure your batteries are holding a charge and that your shore power and charging systems are reliable.
π§ 2. Inspect Bilge Pumps & Float Switches
A failing bilge pump during heavy rain is a recipe for disaster. Test all pumps and clean out debris from the bilge area. Make sure float switches activate properly.
π 3. Secure Electrical & Electronics
Disconnect and secure chartplotters, sonar, radios, and radar domes. If your gear is mounted, consider removing covers or wrapping them in protective plastic for moisture control.
π 4. Double Down on Dock Lines & Fenders
Swap in heavier-duty dock lines and double them up with spring lines if possible. Add extra fenders to protect from surge and contact with pilings or neighboring boats.
π©οΈ 5. Protect Openings & Seals
Make sure hatches, ports, and console doors are sealed tight. Consider taping or shrink-wrapping electronics compartments or switch panels.
π§° Bonus Tip: Emergency Tool Kit
Keep a go-bag of essential tools, spare lines, flashlight, and a portable bilge pump on board β just in case you have to make a quick fix before or after a storm.
